ICIVF

INVESTOR

Day

Even after years

of experience, setting

up a new fund is still

no easy task. The

unfamiliar process, the

unseen obstacles, the

endless complications;

from getting a fund

assembled to catering

to the different needs

and worries faced by

investors. Everyday to me is

still a learning process. But

then again, for all the diffi-

culties that we have went

through, the thought itself,

I would hope that nobody

has to go through them the

way we did: finishing work

in the middle of the night

only having to walk down a

flight of stairs from the 12th

floor; travelling from north

to south and north again

in a day on an undeveloped

road to meet potential

clients that nobody knew if

it would end up a success.

In the larger scheme of

things, both i Capital Global

and I Capital International

Value Funds, like

i

Capital.

biz Berhad, were set up

with the ultimate aim to

help make the world a

better place, a better global

society. Saying that the

journey in building up these

funds was tough and stren-

uous is an understatement;

managing them is actually

the easy and enjoyable

part. I enjoy researching

and analysing. Truth is, I

never knew where this road

less travelled would lead

us, where we would end

up. The thought of it still

bugs me till this day as we

are always asking whether

we could have done it in

an easier way. To set up

a fund in countries that I

have never operated in; the

different values, laws and

regulations that were once

so foreign to us. Imagine

a not so well-known Asian

from a still developing

Malaysia which is not part

of big firms, raising funds

in a developed Western

country as a startup. A

professional firm once

commented that they have

never come across such

stringent performance

fee benchmark for a fund.

Funds set up by Capital

Dynamics are practically

funds that few Asian firms

have done before. Many

fund managers would have

taken the easy way out. But

with hard work, commit-

ment, dogged determina-

tion and integrity, after all

that were achieved, these

are what define i Capital,

Capital Dynamics and the

people who work at

Capital Dynamics.

From only RM48,000,

I am thankful that all

our subscribers and

investors that have

trusted us, are able

to grow with I Capital

and Capital Dynamics

for the past 27 years.

What defines i Capital,

Capital Dynamics ?

We have always been a

little choosy in terms

of getting the right

investors – someone that

shares the same beliefs

as I do. I focus not so

much on the raising

AUM but on whether I

am growing the assets

for our subscribers

and investors within

acceptable level of risks.

At Capital Dynamics,

we focus on managing

risk, that is, the perma-

nent loss of capital,

not volatility. Spending

time with investors and

getting to know as many

of them in every gather-

ing, I am thankful for all

that they have shared

and are still sharing with

me. Only from there,

we are able to identify

and discuss and share

views on any issues

better. Unlike other

fund managers, Capital

Dynamics has not raised

funds via distributors,

commission agents, etc.

Secondly, clients get to

interact directly with me

and to understand why

I am doing everything

that I am doing – my

thoughts, my strategies,

my outlook.

All that the subscrib-

ers, investors and we

have today, we started all

from scratch. Pictures

may show a smooth-sail-

ing event but as much as

one tries to, no one will

know what really went

on behind the scenes.

To work on weekends so

that our investors could

attend annual gatherings

at cost all borne by us;

to coordinate with my

staff and vendors till wee

hours; to look for venues

and meeting datelines

for deliverables months

ahead; to not only setting

up funds so that our

investors could invest

locally and globally, but

also having Investor Day

annually to educate

the public.
